La Liga Season Preview 2015/16 – Sporting Gijon

We predict that newly promoted Sporting Gijon will finish in 19th position.

After finishing in 2nd place last season, Gijon were promoted from Liga Adelante up into the La Liga. Throughout the whole season, they lost just two matches; these came against champions Real Betis and fifth place Real Valladolid. This shows that they’re a very strong team that are hard to beat. However, they may have lost just two games through the season but they drew a whopping 19 games – the highest in the league. Why did they draw so many games? During the 42 games, they conceded just 27 goals – pretty impressive. However, they only scored 57 goals, two more than the team who finished bottom. As we can clearly see here, they’re very strong at the back but going forward is where they struggle.

Are they strong enough to void the drop? We believe not. With Sporting having a transfer ban, theyre unable to make any key signings that will help them stay up. I believe that they will struggle to score goals against most teams however, from last years impressive defensive record, i reckon that they will clinch a few 1-0, 2-1 wins because they can defend very well. This doesn’t mean that they will do it week in, week out but they will do it in a few games against strong teams. With their first 3 games being against strong opponents, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Valencia, i feel that they will be rock bottom after these games. This will give the team and the fans no confidence going forward. However, with Sporting’s next 3 games after that, they play last years relegation battling Deportivo, mid-table Rayo Vallecano and newly promoted Real Betis, i feel that they can possibly get some points on the board there to get there season up and running.

For me, Sporting’s key player next season will be full back Alberto Lora. After missing just 233/3780 minutes in Sporting Gijon’s league game last season, Lora was certainly one of coach Abelardo Fernandez’ first names on the team sheet. This is because he gave all he had each week and continued to impress the gaffer. Lora is currently Sporting’s vice captain. This shows that the manager believes in him for what he does physically as well as vocally. Alberto Lora is one of Gijon’s most experienced player playing over 200 games for the club. He began playing for the ‘B’ team in 2006 and was given the chance to play in the ‘A’ team. However, he didn’t really prove himself at such young age and was demoted back to the ‘B’ team. When he knew he was ready, in 2009, he was promoted bak into the ‘A’ team where he is now a key player to the side.

It seams to me that Dijon need some attacking threat in their squad. However, because of the transfer ban that they have, they can’t buy any players. The only thing that they can do is sign players from their ‘B’ team or sign free agents. One player that would be a great signing is ex Roma forward Antonio Cassano. He may be 33 years old but he has lost of experience but can score or provide a goal here and there. It is essential that they sign a new forward otherwise they have no hope scoring goals next season.
