Liverpool 2015-2016 Season Preview

The new season is approaching and Liverpool are looking to improve on their 2014-2015 disastrous season.
Robert Colman shares his thoughts.

It was a disappointing campaign for the reds as they finished 6th in the Barclays Premier league. Liverpool surprisingly challenged there rivals, Manchester city for the title during the 2013-2014 season and during the summer the club carelessly spent money on squad rotation players from the sale of the superstar Luis Suarez. This led to the disastrous campaign that the reds had in the 2014-2015 season.

Many players were woeful for Liverpool during the season but the Brazilian attacking midfielder, Coutinho had a fantastic season that left many supporters confident about the future. Brendan Rodgers has brought in many players during the summer period including the marquee signings of Roberto Firmino, Christian Benteke and Nathaniel Clyne. These signings have given fans hope for the new season as they are very talented and have shown class at their previous clubs. Other signings such as James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez are showing impressive performances on the pre-season tour and they are all looking to challenge other players at the club for a spot in the first team.

Many Liverpool players played poorly last season, including the reds strike force. The reds main striker, Daniel Sturridge was not able to play as he has been out with a continuous knee injury, resulting in Liverpool having to play there back-up strikers. These consisted of Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini. Goals were a struggle for Liverpool because these strikers did not perform to the best of their ability. As a result of this, the reds were only able to score a shocking 52 goals during the eventful season. Although scoring was not Liverpool’s only problems as injuries were also occurring in the reds defence and the lack of quality from the defenders was clearly showing. In total the Merseysiders conceded an appalling 48 goals, which shows that the club will need to bring in some more defenders if they want to succeed during the season. Although there are some promising signs as the young English defender, Joe Gomez has exceeded during pre-season and could be the key to Liverpool’s defensive problems. Liverpool have also improved there attacking options by bringing in Benteke and Firmino as they are undoubtedly talented and can score many goals which the reds are desperately in need of.

Many fans are remaining positive as the club have brought in many impressive signings that are looking promising but they have lost a key player in there team, Raheem Sterling. He was key to many of the attacks and created many chances last season. However an upcoming star called Jordan Ibe may fill the shoes of the youngster after unbelievable performances during the pre-season tour. He has shown skill, pace and determination that could earn himself a slot in the first team.

I believe that Liverpool are going to improve on this season’s performance and achieve their objective of a top four finish that will allow them to play champions league football for the season after, which every player dreams of. This season they have many new key players which I think are going to succeed and become top players within the league. I also predict that Liverpool are going to exceed in the goal scoring area as they have brought in more attacking players to the club that are able to score goals. This shows that I think that Liverpool are going to have a successful campaign.

Predicted finish: 3rd
