Getafe Prediction 15/16 – 13th
Getafe’s 15th placed finish last year was as a result of a solid mid season, but a poor start and finish. Fran Escribá’s side started the season with just one win in 5, and ended it without a victory in 8, including resounding defeats to Barcelona (6-0) and Real Madrid (7-3). Much like the previous season, where Azulones toyed with the European cup slots in early weeks before slipping in and out of the relegation zone towards the end of the season, Getafe struggled to maintain the level of performance required to compete in La Liga, and slumped into mediocrity. On balance, Getafe’s fans might consider a mid-table finish a success, but will almost certainly demand more consistency from their side this season.
Loan signing Emiliano Velazquez and free transfer Juan Cala will hope to add stability to defence, while young midfielder Alvaro Medran, on loan from Real Madrid, will hope to add much needed goals to a side who scored the 3rd fewest goals last season. The 21-year old boasts Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger as fans, and much is expected from a player many liken to Isco.
A cup run was a welcome distraction to their up and down league form last season, and Getafe managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey. Villarreal proved to be too strong for them however, and Getafe were comfortably beaten 2-0 over both legs. If Getafe are destined for another inconsistent season in La Liga, getting past the quarter final stage would be a fantastic achievement, and a good performance in the Copa Del Rey could be considered the makings of a good season. A more solid defence and the addition of Medran to midfield should propel the club a few places up the league however, with a 13th placed finish a realistic prospect.
