Dimitri Payet. Not a very well known figure in England, until now. He showed us just what a high calibre signing he is for West Ham and he isn’t one to be underestimated.
Arriving from French club Marseille on a five-year deal for £10.7million, Payet took to the stage at the Emirates on Saturday against a strong looking Arsenal side. It was very much an attacking performance from the Hammers which resulted in a 2-0 victory. The London Derby provided very little pressure for the French international, as it showed he wasn’t afraid to run at the Gunner’s defence.
The 28-year-old was one of the standout performers in French Ligue 1 last season, recording more assists than any other player in the division. He played on the left which proved to be a good move from new Hammers manager Slaven Bilic, but he can also play in the number 10 role behind the strikers.
Darting runs and great delivery was apparent on Saturday and his desire to run and always want the ball is second to none. He has now brought that style of play to the Premier League which has been exciting already from new players.
West Ham fans are pleased with the signing which will ‘set the league alight’. If Dimitri performs to the same standard week in week out, he will do just that and there will definitely be a smile on David Gold’s face.
It’s hard to know why a bigger club has not come in for the Frenchman. It could however be because of his inconsistency in the past, but it is now evidently left there.
Speaking to the official Website:
“West Ham really showed me that they wanted me to come, both the joint-chairmen and the manager,” Payet told the club’s official website. “That’s very important for me. I was also keen to sign up to a clear project. West Ham’s is very interesting and matches perfectly with my ambitions.
“Firstly I spoke with the manager, who really wished for me to come here and had been watching me a lot. He made it clear that he wanted me to sign and that too was important in my choice.
“I’m an attacking footballer so for sure I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility. The fact that I’m here is also down to that.
Last season he created 135 chances compared to De Bruyne’s 112 and Eden Hazard’s 101 – the highest in the top five European leagues. A remarkable stat considering he only cost just over £10million.
Playmaking isn’t Payet’s only skill. He is also a superb dribbler, who displays bursts of pace and produces plenty of flair. He is extremely confident on the ball, and is quite often attempting Zidane like turns and ball control skills.
Payet has also got a decent shot on him. He scored 7 goals from Midfield last season, his goals are a wide variety; ranging from headers, long shots, tap-ins and free-kicks.

It will be good to see how he get’s on in coming weeks and for the rest of the new season. He will definitely be staying in my Fantasy Football team!
