UEFA announced their three finalists for the coveted Best Player of Europe Award, featuring two reigning treble-winners and La Liga’s Pichichi Award winner.
The top ten players with the most points went on to advance to the second vote, and Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo were the top three of all players. Despite the lack of Neymar in the final 3 man shortlist it is the 23-year-old’s teammates’s who are deserving nominees after forming a formidable attacking partnership which inspired Barcelona to a historic European and Domestic treble last season. Ronaldo who won the trophy last year, earns another nomination after a season in which he scored 61 goals in 54 appearances as his performance inspired Real Madrid to UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup glory last season.
There will be one more vote to determine who is the winner of the award, which will take place at the UEFA Champions League Group Stage Draw on 27th August in Monaco.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have already won the award in 2011 and 2014, respectively, while Suarez has always just missed the cut and is hoping to finally win the award after several stellar seasons.
The UEFA Best Player of Europe Award winner is usually tipped to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award the following January.
