Tuesday 13th October at approximately 9:45pm, Holland will know their European Championship fate as their game finishes against the Czech Republic. The Dutch need to beat the Czech Republic at home and hope that Turkey lose to Iceland to secure a play-off place if they are to make sure they will not make it to an international tournament for the first time since 2002. Danny Blind, father of Manchester United and Holland defender Daley Blind, has recently assured the Dutch supporters that “we are still alive and that is what we must focus on”. Blind has taken up a tough task by replacing Guus Hiddink in July after a poor run of results.
What has to be done tonight?
The only way Holland can reach the play-offs is by hoping that Turkey’s 2-point gap for 3rd is cut if Holland win and Turkey lose their game, but if Holland win and Turkey get themselves a draw, Turkey will still get themselves a play-off place because of Turkey’s superior head-to-head record.
So with everything to play for in Amsterdam tonight, can Holland secure a play-off place? Or will already-qualified Czech Republic and Faith Terim’s Turkey side dampen Holland’s hopes and put them into peril? Only time will tell if Holland recover, depending on whether they crash out in dramatic style.
