Who should make up Man United’s midfield pairing?

Following ‘that’ defeat to the gunners, Van Gaal has yet to settle on a permanent midfield pairing.

The pairing of new summer addition Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick did little to quell the threat of the likes of Walcott, Sanchez and Ozil and looked lost infront of their own back four.

The injuries the German has suffered over the last few seasons of his time with Bayern, coupled with his age, means he is susceptible to being overran and outpaced in the middle of the park. It may be too soon to disregard him out of the team but it looks like he needs to get used to the Premier League a bit more.

His recent partner Carrick isn’t the quickest either so maybe more pace is needed. However the England international has appeared more balanced and comfortable when paired with either Morgan Schneiderlin or Ander Herrera instead of Schweinsteiger. He has also featured in all eight of the club’s Premier League games so far this season.

Schneiderlin is yet to cement his place in the starting 11 and Fellani is also an in-out player. The French international has played more minutes in the league than any of his fellow midfielders, and has also registered a higher pass completion (91%), won more tackles (16) and made more interceptions (20).

There is also Ander Herrera, he may not be a popular choice by his manager but he offers a lot of creativity that others don’t. Despite appearing in only four games, at least three fewer than any of the other candidates for the midfield roles, the Spaniard has made more key passes (5) and created more chances (5) than his teammates.

The former Athletic Bilbao man also offers a significant goal threat, having notched twice this season with his penalty in the 3-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield and his goal in the 4-0 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifier with Carrick, Schweinsteiger or Schneiderlin yet to get on the scoresheet.

It’s only a matter of time before Louis van Gaal hands the pair a starting role in the side for a run of games.
