Dylan Thwaites, the chief executive of Leeds United fan group Leeds Fans United, believes that current chairman Massimo Cellino is only prepared to sell the majority stake of the club to Leeds Fans United.
“Massimo was absolutely clear he was only selling to fans. It’s Leeds United-there are always rumors. But I think it would be crazy for anyone to seek to steal this deal from the Leeds fans. The level of hostility generated would be a death blow to any sensible bid plan”.
Cellino announced last Friday that he would sell the club to the Leeds fans and would forgo any profit made.
He is also thought to be “sad and embarrassed” at how his ownership of the Championship club, who currently sit 19th in the league, has turned out.
Leeds Fans United was originally created to buy a minority stake in the club but they seem to be aiming for much higher heights now that Cellino is stepping down. The final thing Thwaites has to say is that “He [Cellino] is adamant that he would only sell to Leeds fans. This clearly gives us an exclusive position. Of course, as professionals we need this signing and we expect to have that shortly”.
So as Leeds look to enter a new era and aim to get back to the dizzy heights of the first division in England, which they dominated alongside Liverpool and Manchester United during the 70’s and 80’s, Leeds Fans United could be set for an easy task or one of the hardest the Football League has ever seen? Only time will tell whether they succeed.
