As his record shows, Jurgen Klopp is one of the greatest managers in the world and his transfer policy at his previous clubs has proven to be a success. In the midst of the January market, what should Liverpool fans expect from the new boss?
Having already secured the signing of youngster Marko Grujic from Red Star Belgrade as a potential ‘Gerrard of the future’, what else can Liverpool fans expect this season? With strikers Christian Benteke and Danny Ings bought in in pre-season, it is unlikely that a new striker will be purchased. Although, it has been rumoured that he is willing to let the injury prone Daniel Sturridge leave if a bid of about £25million came in. This could well mean that another striker will be purchased. With Mignolet featuring infrequently and relatively unreliable, a new goalkeeper could well grace the KOP this season. The German has confirmed that he looks to react to the Merseyside club’s injury crisis, reports this week have suggested that Klopp was looking to add an experienced centre-back to the side on a short-term deal, following injuries to Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Joe Gomez. The loan signing of Steven Caulker bolsters the squad on a temporary basis. With such a player difficult to find at present, Klopp may well be after Dortmund captain Mats Hummels, whom he knows well. Klopp may well be preparing to raid former club Borussia Dortmund, with links being made also between the club and the likes of Marco Reus and İlkay Gündoğan.
Building for the future?
With Klopp ruling out any title challenge this campaign, it is clear that he looks to build for the future, the signing of Grujic being an excellent platform to build on for the Reds. With a mixture of experience and youth prospects likely to be on the cards for the Merseyside club.
