Could a Move to the Championship be Nick Powell’s Resurrection?

After two remarkable seasons with Crewe Alexandra, 18-year-old Nick Powell signed for global giants Manchester United in July 2012, for a reported fee of £6 million. United’s manager at the time, Sir Alex Ferguson, was highly enthusiastic about the attacking midfielder; suggesting that he would have a bright future at The Red Devils. However, since the retirement of United’s most successful manager, Powell has found himself somewhat adrift from the first team, making only three competitive appearances for United since his move.

Despite an impressive loan spell with Wigan Athletic in the 13/14 season, the youngster still found himself way down in the pecking order at his parent club. Due to this, he was loaned out to Premier League outfit Leicester City last season, however, Powell saw his loan terminated in December after making only three appearances.

The 21-year-old has since made just two competitive substitute appearances for Manchester United-and Louis Van Gaal has reportedly told him that he can leave the club.

With many media outlets reporting that both Hull City and Ipswich Town are chasing the central attacking midfielder on a loan deal, with a view to make it permanent, it may only be a matter of time before we see Nick Powell’s time at United come to an end.

Having already gained experience in the Championship with Wigan Athletic, Powell would no-doubt be a key asset to any Championship outfit.

He has already displayed glimpses of his current ability and, if he is given plenty of competitive game time within a first team squad, the 21-year-old could certainly return to play in the Premier League.

We will have to wait and see whether Transfer Deadline Day has anything in store for the midfielder. Be sure to follow TFF for ALL of the latest TDD updates.
