Gunners Going for the Title?

When you hear people talking about Arsenal and the premier league you will often hear the words ‘consistency’ and ‘let it slip’. An example of the concistency that Arsenal have shown in the last decade is the amount of times that the Gunners finished below fourth, which was 11 years ago in the 1994/95 season when they finished 5th. Even though this sounds like a great achievement for the club, some say it isn’t satisfying enough as they haven’t won the title since 2003/04 season in which the unbeatable’s were created. Since then Arsenal haven’t found the form needed to take them that one stage further to the win the league. However this year maybe their year…

So far this season Arsenal have played some brilliant football, no thanks to their key players such as Santi Carzola, Alexis Sanchez and the assist king Mezut Ozil. As well as the pre season addition of Czech Republic keeper Petr Cech, they have never looked better between the sticks. Credit goes to Arsene Wenger for the football they play, which is often breath taking to watch. On the other hand Arsenal’s form has started to slip the last few games with draws against Stoke, Southampton and Liverpool as well as the loss to Chelsea in which Per Mertersacker was sent off. Lots of fans are starting to worry that the North London side are throwing their chance away yet again. Both Arsenal and Leicester have been sitting at the top of the table the whole season but now it seems that the unlikely title contenders of Leicester City are climbing away from them. In addition to this Arsenal have also dropped below local rivals Tottenham and many fans are unhappy that this has managed to be achieved.

With the transfer window over and during this time the only acquisition for the gunners was Egyptian centre midfielder Mohammed Elneny. Many fans feel that it was a chance missed to invest and acquire players that could help them push for the title. One name heavily linked to club was Borrusia Dortmund striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang who many felt was the ideal player for Arsenal. Personally I feel that they are a striker and centre back short and without purchasing any of these this window they may find it hard to push contenders such as Manchester City all the way. However it is not all doom and gloom for Arsenal as the first half of the season was exceptional and the players in the squad are capable of winning against any team. Its only the past few games in which they have dropped points and if Arsenal can regain their form from earlier on in the season then there is no reason why they cannot make a strong challenge for the league this year.

If Arsenal were to fail this season in winning the league then I feel that the summer transfer window coming up will be the biggest for the club in years, as with Manchester City have already strengthened their managerial position. Arsenal are going to need all the firepower they can get to beat the sky blues. Their supporters are asking for a title and miss the days of Henry, Viera and Pires and strive for another a title in which they have been starved from in previous years.  The real question is can the squad they have pull of a title winning push this season?

Overall Arsenal supporters should not start worrying just yet as there is a long way to go before the end of the season. There will be many twists and turns to go in which has been labelled as ‘the most unexpected season ever’. If the gunners can rekindle their form for the rest of the season then I feel that Arsenal have the strength in personnel to win the much coveted Barclays Premier League trophy.
