After a poor second half performance from Arsenal against Swansea which resulted in a 2-1 loss has severely dented Arsenal’s dreams of winning the Premier League Title this season and has been the latest result to add to the downfall of Arsenals title challenge. If you had asked any Arsenal fan in December if Arsenal was going to win the league? sitting top of the League and taking advantage of what has been the strangest Premier League Season of all time, remarkably managing to qualify into the last 16 of the Champions League after losing the first two games against the easiest opponents in the group and looking to regain the FA Cup for a third season then the answer would of been yes. Fast forward to March Arsenal have only managed to win 3 games in the Premier League since January and following poor results against Hull City in the FA Cup and a loss which was expected to Barcelona, so what has caused this downfall and seen Arsenal drop from the top of the table and flying high to being back to what most fans are used to of looking to stay in the top four this season.
At the start of the 2015/16 season the confidence was flowing with a highly successful pre season campaign winning the Barclays Asia Trophy over Everton and winning the Emirates Cup with a highly impressive performance against Lyon winning 6-0, following this was a 1-0 win over defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the Community Shield and the atmosphere amongst the fans for the coming season was the feeling of the best chance of challenging for the title in many years. The signing of Petr Cech from Arch Rivals Chelsea was seen as a bargain and one of the signings of the season and filling the whole that Arsenal have been dying for since the days of club legends David Seaman and Jens Lehmann,Cech’s life at Arsenal didn’t get off to the start he would of liked losing the first game of the season to West Ham at home but after this slight slip-up at first over the coming months Cech was a key figure in vital results against the likes of Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. The confidence in the side in the first half of the season was a key area to the game of Arsenal with key players striving off this with the likes of Oliver Giroud scoring vital goals to fire Arsenal to the top of the table. Since the start of the year it seems someone has come along and burst Arsenals bubble and has been knocked back down to earth with a poor run of form and injuries to key players like Alexis Sanchez, Francis Coquelin, Danny Welbeck and Santi Cazola resulted in Arsenal dropping to third in the table and arch rivals Spurs rising above them in the table, an issue that has been seen in the poor run of form is key players that was stealing the show for Arsenal at the start of the season like Oliver Giroud and Alexis Sanchez have not been performing to the levels that everyone has expected of them and has had a huge impact for the form of the club and has shown without these players the squad depth is not worthy of winning the Premier League Title.
This season you can argue at the start of the season Arsenal had the mentality of a side that was going to challenge for the title and during the first few months picking up key results against Manchester City and Manchester United at home and Arsenal was gaining the interest of pundits to go all the way but as Arsenal fans know more than anyone the squad overall does not have a winning mentality. When it comes to playing against the big teams there is always a sense of fear among the players and also the manager Arsene Wenger and a prime example of this is Chelsea, this season has been Chelsea’s worst season since Roman Abramovich brought the club and with the club struggling and showing no signs of them turning it around it looked like Arsenal might finally be able to turn the tables and prove they are a club that can be the best and beat the “Top Clubs” like Chelsea and Wenger finally get the upper hand on Jose Mourinho but yet again the mentality was not there and suffered a loss both home and away to them this season. The current Arsenal side does not have the Mentality that the greatest side of Arsenal’s history had in the invisibles had in that every game they went into they knew they was the team to beat and people feared them, the Arsenal team of current may play some of the most attractive football in the Premier League but they are not feared and teams have worked out how to break this down and get into the heads of the players and shown in the last few months when the results have mattered the most the team has crumbled.
This season was meant to be the season Arsenal had to win the League, everything has gone their way with other big teams not living up to exceptions living a gap for Arsenal to walk to the top but have been overcome by the surprise of the season Leicester City. Although Leicester have arguably been the most impressive team of the season proving that money does not bring success Arsenal should have still had the mentality to show that as a team with the background and having a manager like Arsene Wenger behind them should have still been able to win the title this season, Arsenal still have hope with picking up a 2-2 draw against North London rivals Spurs but with the game going Arsenals way being 1-0 up at half time another key error came in Francis Coquelin gave away a silly foul and potentially cost Arsenal a win and results like these show the mentality to win this title is not among them.
