Memphis Depay Star or Sub?

Looking back over United’s last couple of fixtures summer signing Memphis Depay has had a fair bit of praise. But is this the start of Depay coming into his own or is this just a few decent sub appearances from the Dutchman.

Memphis came to United after a stunning season at PSV Eindhoven which saw him play 37 times in which he score 25 goals and made 5 assists a key contributor to PSV’s 14/15 title winning season. The following summer saw Memphis join up with his former national team boss Louis Van Gaal as he joined Manchester United for a fee of around 21 million pounds.

Depay has struggled to recreate the same form he had whilst in Holland, since moving to the Premiership Memphis featured in the first 8 fixtures of the season in which United won 5 of those 8. However, Memphis did not have a great impact on those games only creating 4 chances in total getting 1 goal and getting 56% off his shots off target. Not great stats for a man who has a reputation of being creative in the final 3rd and getting shots on target for fun. Although Memphis wasn’t showing his class in the league in the champions league qualifier against Club Brugge you could not doubt his potential, I was lucky enough to be at the home leg where he scored twice and ran rings round the oppositions defence he was a joy to watch. You could see the class and determination from Memphis that we had previously seen.

So in Europe Memphis looked very promising, but his league form still was not up to scratch. He missed the next 4 league games, but made his return away at Watford but the next 7 games would see Memphis and United decrease severely in form. Winning at Watford would be followed by 2 draws 3 defeats and another draw this was not what United or Depay wanted. Memphis managed 1 goal, created 3 chances, he lost over 50% of his duels with opposition players and hit over 50% of his shots off target. For me, I also noticed that Depay would be slow to get up, would not track back and didn’t seem to want to win the ball back after he’d lost it which would frustrate United fans. Troubling times for the wide man, but at least his form was slightly better in the Champions league, he scored the same amount of goals created 2 more chances he also got over 60% of his shots on target in our 6 games in the competition. He looked a different player in those games he had more desire, but as we all know United’s time in the Champions League was cut short, are only hope of seeing the real Memphis Depay was gone or was it?

We entered the Europa League with another chance for Memphis to showcase his ability. After a disappointing start in Denmark, United really needed their players to turn up at Old Trafford to keep their place in the competition. With a huge win against Midtjylland that a lot of people were inspired by the tremendous ability of Memphis Depay. After tormenting the Midtjylland back line Memphis was rewarded with a goal and a start against Arsenal and Watford. He has seemed to show a bit more desire and a bit more get up and go in recent games.

United have been looking for a number 7 for some time now and is Memphis the answer. I honestly believe he can be if he shows the desire and the heart he has done on the odd occasion on a more consistent basis. No doubt he has the ability to be a great player maybe he just needs more time to adjust to the Premiership. His physical ability is getting better game after game his skills are working a lot more often he creates more chances defends more if his mental attitude is picking up as fast as his ability is then we 100 % have found a player worthy of wearing the number 7 shirt. Memphis will be a star at United we just need to give the Dutchman more time to adjust. I have no doubt he’ll be a star at United.
