Three Players Manchester United Regretfully Let Go

Plenty of players come and go from clubs. Some players fans are happy to see the back of, and there are those players that leave, that creates devastation amongst fans and leads to questioning of the reason behind the club letting them go. Throughout the last couple of seasons, Manchester United, a club of great prestige, has shown the door to those players who they feel just simply aren’t good enough to wear the famous shirt. There are some players that have been let go over the years that have the potential to come back and actually improve the squad manager Louis Van Gal currently has. In this article, we look at three players that could help the Red Devils put up a more convincing fight for a Champions league spot and could have potentially helped them win silverware in cup-based competitions. We start with the Frenchman himself…

1.Paul Pogba

Age – 22

Manchester United – 2009-12 (including youth career)

First Team Appearances – 3

Goals – 0

Sold for – FREE

It has been no secret since moving to Juventus in 2012 Pogba has become one of the greatest young players in the world. He is well-built, physical and fast. It has been said that the United reject has the full package of any midfielder. He works hard for the team and has the capability to take any game by the scruff of the neck with his potential to create something magic when his team are much in need. In his time with the Italian Giants, the 22-year-old has clocked up one hundred appearances and managed 25 goals. This season alone, Pogba has won over 50% of his defensive battles, has over 80% pass accuracy and 5 goals in 27 games for The Old Lady. His form since joining Juventus hasn’t gone unnoticed however, picking up 27 caps for his national team since 2013, and being named in FIFA’s World XI of 2015. With Pogba being so impressive of the world stage, there are many questions raised to why United let him go. The story that came out of Old Trafford was that the player himself wanted guaranteed first team football. Ex-manager Sir Alex felt that he was unable to grant the Frenchman his wishes, as he had better options at the time. Looking at the current Manchester United team, Pogba would be a more mobile option in the centre of midfielder, instead of the likes of the recent partnership of Carrick and Bastian. It is evident that both of these players are coming towards the tail end of their careers and are losing the quality to dominate over other up and coming talents. Overall, Pogba has the potential to improve any midfield in any current league. With his height and physical strength, his passing, shooting and tackling, he has all the attributes that make him stand out from others. He would certainly be a guaranteed starter under Van Gaal this season.

2. Ryan Shawcross

Age – 28

Manchester United – 2002-08 (including youth career)

First team appearances – 0

Goals – 0

Sold for – £1 million

Ryan Shawcross is a no nonsense centre back who now currently plays for Stoke City. The dominant defender has played over 250 games for Stoke and is proving he can change his style of football as he and the Potters are making the transition from a rough side who play the long ball to a passing well organised outfit. Throughout the season, Manchester United have picked up many injuries especially in defence. Van Gaal has been very limited with his starting 11, reverting Blind at the centre of a back four. United could have done with Ryan as he’s proven his quality over the last 3 seasons, including the current season by winning nearly 60% of all his duels, only picking up 1 red card in the league and having a 72% pass completion from the back. Shawcross has really become a hard working individual whose physicality is noticed by his opponents as he knows how to shut out the other team.

3. Javier Hernandez

Age – 27

Manchester United – 2010-15 (no youth career at club)

First team appearances – 103

Goals – 37

Sold for – £12 million

A lot of people argue that Van Gaal was wrong to let Hernandez go, especially when we have struggled with injuries to members of our senior strike force. It is clear fans have no issue with players like Rashford getting a start this season and obviously when he fired two past Arsenal every United fan was ecstatic. But we had a striker at the start of the season who would have been able to step up to the plate in Chicharito who has proved his abilities since moving to the Bundesliga with Bayern Leverkusen. Since his move he has managed 14 goals in 20 games for Leverkusen putting him in the 4th top scoring spot behind Bayern Munich’s Muller and Lewandowski and Dortmund’s Aubameyang, two of which have been linked with United over the last couple of windows. Hernandez wasn’t just an impact off the bench; he ran his socks off for the full 90 and was a real hard worker for the club. With the ability to pop up at any point with a vital goal, Hernandez is a huge loss to the side in terms of his goal scoring.

I believe that these players could get into United’s team currently and argue a case even when we have no injuries. Shawcross and Pogba have shown they have a huge influence on their teams and are considered leaders out on the pitch. Hernandez is a proven goal scorer who works hard and doesn’t fear any defence. The qualities they have along with their playing ability show the mark of really good if not world-class players and they are all proving their worth at their clubs, for example Shawcross proving week in week out he is a top premiership defender. I often wonder why Sir Alex and Van Gaal let these players go, but I am not one to argue with the gaffer however, I would love to see these players back given the opportunity.
