United have 8 games left to go in the Premier League season and with the chance to still get top 4 there is no game that United can take it easy.
After the win at City there is only a 1-point gap between the Manchester clubs, and West Ham are only a point off themselves. United, therefore cannot afford any slip-ups. United host Everton the travel to Spurs then head back to Manchester to face Villa, Palace and league leaders Leicester, then back on the road to face Norwich and West Ham before Bournemouth head to Old Trafford to face the Red Devils. All difficult games but United must take points from as many as they can, in order to challenge for top 4.
West Ham, Spurs and Leicester are all challenging for glory this season. For West Ham like United it’s about breaking into that top four and potentially executing the remainder of their FA Cup campaign. But for Spurs and Leicester, it is more than that, it is all about that League title. All three sides have proven that this season they are to be respected as top teams, that however isn’t to say that United aren’t capable of overcoming them but they need to be weary of their upcoming opponents.
When it comes to West Ham, United can’t allow their talisman Dimitri Payet to perform he has proven to be a handful especially when it comes to his dead balls. Payet scored a free kick against United in the FA Cup and a stunning free kick at that. Keeping that man quiet is huge and not giving him too many opportunities to strike a dead ball. With Leicester and Spurs, it is all about keeping the deadly duo’s quiet Kane and Ali for Spurs and for Leicester Vardy and Mahrez. Both pairs have been deadly this season getting goals and assists for fun firing their teams into the top 2 spots in the table. Smalling, Blind, Darmian and co. will need a repeat performance of the previous games against the two sides in the league only conceding 1 goal and gaining 4 points out of 6.
Everton, Villa, Palace, Bournemouth and Norwich have different things to be fighting for. For some, it is for pride and for others it is to climb the tables and either escape or get away from the relegation zone. All of these teams have key players to watch out for again however their form throughout the season has told us that they are not performing to the standard expected of them. That being said we all know how teams near the bottom or those who are underperforming can turn things around against big clubs, Van Gaal and his men need to go into these matches expecting a scrappy affair where their opposition will be more than up for it. That being said we all know how teams near the bottom or those who are underperforming can turn things around against big clubs, Van Gaal and his men need to go into these matches expecting a scrappy affair where their opposition will be more than up for it. With rumours of Lukaku wanting to move to from Everton and United being linked this could be the perfect time to play them as the team and their stars will be a little frustrated and may not be clicking as normal.
United have only lost 3 in their last 10 league games due to good performances from the squad, but in some matches key individuals have stepped up and really put in a shift.
Who do MUFC need to step up in the next couple of games?
the first player is Morgan Schneiderlin. Schneiderlin’s calming influence on the side is definitely needed in the side rather than Fellaini’s aggressive style. Morgan keeps the ball and play’s a more sensible pass calming the midfield down. He has 88% pass completion over the last ten games keeping the ball is important for this United team lately as we play a more possession style. The next is the big man at the back Chris Smalling off the back of his Man of the Match performance against Man City, Smalling has shown that he is a leader in this United team and that he is the best defensive player. The next player is the big man at the back, Chris Smalling off the back of his Man of the Match performance against Man City, Smalling has shown that he is a leader in this United team and that he is the best defensive player. Chris is a now United’s established centre-half the rock at the back and he’s proven to be pretty handy on the ball as well. If those two play and perform to the standard expected of them I believe it will allow the rest of the squad to play to the best of their ability’s taking pressure off the defence and allowing the attack to focus and take the game to the opposition.
United’s current formation allows us to play out from the back, break up play and attack using width. With Memphis, Martial and Lingard all attacking with width really helps out United and is capable of tearing apart any defence if given the chance. However, one thing that needs to be altered is that United need to use Fellaini more appropriately, they cannot afford to start Fellaini as much as they did in the last 8 matches. This is simply because teams have figured him out and go out to aggravate Fellaini causing him to get complacent with shots, headers and passes. His aggression is also poor for United in these games as Fellaini is always at risk of a yellow card.
