Aston Villa’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed today (16th April) as they were easily beaten 1-0 by a superior Manchester United side at Old Trafford.
The only goal of the game was scored by Marcus Rashford, his seventh goal in only 12 appearances for Louis Van Gaal’s team, easily placing the ball past Villa keeper Brad Guzan.
Although, Aston Villa did have the odd chance throughout the game, with Rudy Gestede hitting the post with a well-timed volley late on.
The defeat leaves Villa 15 points from safety with only 12 left to play for, with most fans already accepting relegation after last week’s defeat to Bournemouth.
Villa, arguably one of the biggest sides in England, are at risk of becoming one of a long list of former premier league clubs slowly slipping down the leagues and, with Bolton’s recent relegation down to League One, the fear of a similar fate could be sinking in the fans minds.
As for Manchester United, this is starting to be one of, if not the brightest spell in Van Gaal’s reign. They are keeping the pressure on their city rivals as they plan to battle it out for the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Manchester United will be looking at the results from Stamford Bridge and The Emirates, hoping that Manchester City and Arsenal can drop points, in order to make the Champions League dream, a reality.
Aston Villa can now host their game against Southampton next Saturday knowing they can play without fear as they now have nothing to play for.
Manchester United, on the other hand, have two fixtures this week, a midweek Premier League tie with Crystal Palace, followed by the biggest game of their season, Everton at Wembley for a place in the FA Cup Final.
