There was a lot of in’s and out’s in this summer’s transfer window. However, now we are in December and I will take this opportunity to review who I think have been the top ten best signings in the Premier league.
10. Paul Pogba
Well.. Paul Pogba’s record-breaking transfer to Manchester United hasn’t hit the potential that it had. Pogba has had a rough start to his return to Manchester United. However, he has shown how good he can be andIi can only see him getting better and better with more experience in the Premier league. After 19 appearances for United this season in all competitions, Pogba has 4 goals and 1 assist. From a player with this much quality they are poor statistics. However, for his strength and pace whilst on the ball he has been one of Manchester United’s most influential players this season.
9. Zlatan Ibrahimović
Another one of Manchester United’s big signings in the summer! Zlatan hit the Premier League with his clinical finishing this season. He had a brilliant start to the season by claiming his first goal of this campaign on his debut against Bournemouth. Since then the big number 9 has been quiet, to say the least. Definitely not hitting the expectations that everyone thought. In 17 games in all competitions, Ibrahimović has scored 12 goals which isn’t the best record in his career. However, with Zlatan picking his form back up in recent games we can only wait and see if the Swedish giant can turn his season around.
8. Eric Bailly
Eric Bailly has probably been Manchester United’s signing of the summer with his pace and strength at the back. At the heart of Manchester United’s defences lies the Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly who can put in some fantastic tackles, to say the least. Bailly was brought in this summer to try to sort out United’s defensive problems and he has gone and done that. He is a rock at the back that strikers fear and at such a young age, definitely a star in the making.
7. Marcos Alonso
Definitely a fantastic investment by Chelsea, adding Marcos Alonso to their ranks to try to restore their European dignity. A delight to watch going forward and also fantastic at the back, Marcos is a very versatile player who can play in a variety of different positions down that left-hand side. Chelsea, who are having a fantastic season this year have a lot of players to thank for their performances this season and Marcos Alonso is definitely one of them. Definitely one of the signings of the seasons for me.
6. Granit Xhaka
Arsenal decided that they were going to strengthen their midfield options with the signing of Swiss youngster Granit Xhaka, who has fit into the Arsenal side quite well. Xhaka has started well for Arsenal this season with a lot of good signs of improvement and potential for the youngster. However, one thing that has let the Swiss down is his discipline. Granit Xhaka picked up a straight red against Swansea City recently for a very dangerous tackle from behind on Modou Barrow. However, Granit has fit nicely into the Arsenal line-up and strengthened their squad immensly.
5. Loris Karius
Liverpool were out looking to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks this transfer window and they came across Loris Karius. After an unfortunate injury which came in his first game for Liverpool in pre-season the German keeper has been in fine form for the reds. After nine appearances, keeping three clean sheets is pretty impressive. Unfortunately for Loris and Liverpool, a poor performance saw Bournemouth come back from 3-1 down to beat Liverpool 4-3 in a fantastic encounter last Sunday. Loris Karius needs to bounce back straight away next week to keep his starting position secure.
4. İlkay Gündoğan
İlkay Gündoğan has been one of City’s best players this season by controlling that midfield. The young German central midfielder has taken the premier league by storm after his move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Manchester City have had a rough start this season but it hasn’t stopped the German putting in some fantastic performances. Especially the one against Barcelona in the Champions League. Surely this season can only get better for Gündoğan?
3. Georginio Wijnaldum
Once again Liverpool improved their squad depth with the signing of Wijnaldum from relegated side Newcastle United in the summer. Wijnaldum has had a bright start to his Liverpool career by putting in some fantastic performances for the Reds. The dutch international can play in a variety of positions in that midfield and can help out defensively also. A very versatile player that Liverpool have invested in. A very good signing from the title challengers.
2. N’Golo Kanté
Definitely one of the signings of the summer for Chelsea. N’Golo Kanté was one of the only players to leave the Premier League champions Leicester City. Chelsea have definitely invested in one of the best central midfielders in the world. Quick and strong on the ball and can pick out a beautiful pass 99% of the time, is there anything the Frenchman can’t do? Chelsea have N’Golo to thank for some fantastic performances this year to see the blues to the top of the league. Surely he can only get better.
1. Sadio Mané
My signing of the summer. Liverpool bought Mané to Anfield after months of speculation and what a signing he has turned out to be. Despite picking up an injury, the new Liverpool man has been outstanding all season in my opinion. Strong and quick whilst on the ball with some fantastic finishes adding to his traits. He has picked up 7 goals this season in the premier league. He has really given Liverpool a strong boost for their title bid.
