Latic old boy returned with a goal.
On a miserable night Wigan suffered a 0-2 defeat to Newcastle United.
Diame set the game alight when he ran through the Wigan defence, played a one-two with former Hull and Arsenal midfielder Isaac Hayden and placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal past Jussi Jääskeläinen.
Diame was causing Wigan a lot of problems in the first half, the ex-Latic showed his worth.
Newcastle won a free-kick from 30-yards out just before half time when Diame was fouled. Gayle took the free-kick and Jääskeläinen saved it at his bottom right-hand side.
Newcastle came into half time the happier of the sides while on the other hand, the Latics went in disappointed.
Will Grigg got an opportunity on 58 minutes when Michael Jacobs whipped in a corner and Grigg’s header glanced just wide of the far post.
Just after the Grigg opportunity, Jacobs played Warnock in down the wing. Warnock put in a low cross which reached Andy Kellett at the far post who hit a powerful shot with his left foot but the shot was matched by the Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow.
The second goal for the Magpies came on 78 minutes when the rejuvenated Yoan Gouffran put a cross in for Atsu, the Ghanaian took a touch and sliced it past Jääskeläinen with 12 minutes remaining of the 90.
The result leaves Latics 23rd in the table, four points from safety. They face Ipswich Town this Saturday.
David Perkins said:
“I thought we started a bit nervously and a bit anxious, then after going 1-0 down, the gaffer said at half-time we were going to go after them.
We huffed and puffed a bit after the break and pretty much threw everything we had at them but in the end the second goal kills us a bit.
We’ve not been outplayed in many games here but we find ourselves in the position we are, so we can’t keep saying that week-in, week-out.
It’s just the win that’s the most important thing we’re under pressure for. The crowd were great tonight and were right behind us.”
