After showing encouraging signs at home to table-toppers Newcastle United in the live televised game on Wednesday, Wigan Athletic return to the DW Stadium for the clash with out of form Ipswich Town. The Latics fell to a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday night, meanwhile Ipswich were beaten in the midlands by Birmingham City in Gary Rowett’s last game as manager of the blues.
The Tics can move to within a point of safety with victory and within 4 points of The Tractor Boys. Town could move as high as 12th, however, inferior goal difference may mean the boys from Suffolk could only reach 14th.
There have been 4 meetings between the two sides at the DW Stadium so far. Wigan winning 3 of them and Ipswich winning just the once in the last meeting in the North-West, a season in which saw the tics relegated to League 1. However, Wigan will have to improve in front of goal at the DW if they’re to extend the winning record against Town, as the loss at home to the Magpies set a new club record: The longest time without scoring a goal at home. Town will also want to brush up on their current record of being the lowest scorers away from home in the division.
Warren Joyce is expected to have another selection nightmare in an already depleted squad, following two injuries to Everton loanee Luke Garbutt and experienced centre-back Craig Morgan. The Wigan gaffer is expected to give a start to full back Andy Kellett as he impressed when he was brought on as a substitute, following his injury layoff. Meanwhile, Nathan Byrne may be on the bench again as he continues his recovery from a slight Ankle injury.
Mick McCarthy on the other-hand is in luck, as left-back Jonas Knudsen is in line for a return to the matchday squad, as he regains fitness following a hamstring injury. McCarthy is expected to make some changes at the back as he searches for Town’s first win in 4 as he makes the journey across the country.
Wigan (Expected): Jaaskelainen, Kellett, Burn, Buxton, Warnock; Wildschut, MacDonald, Power, Perkins, Jacobs; Grigg.
Ipswich (Expected): Bialkowski, Chambers, Webster, Berra, Knudsen; Ward, Douglas, Skuse, Lawrence; McGoldrick, Pitman.
