Welcome, a very merry TFFmas from all of us here at the blog. As we head into the holiday season, there is plenty to look forward to both on the pitch and off it and we are looking forward to the month ahead. This December we will be running the 25 Days of TFFmas, every day up until the big day we will be publishing Christmas wishlists from members of our team for what they would like their club to get for Christmas.
It’s Christmas Eve and, to be honest, everyone else if off on Holiday already, so today we’re asking the co-creator of the series Ben Jones about what he would like Arsenal to get this Christmas.
Nobody is quite sure what to make of Arsenal’s last season, should the fans be happy that they came higher than third for the first time since the 2004/05 season and they snatched it from Spurs on the last day or should they be disappointed that they let slip a chance to win one of the most open Premier League seasons ever. With the arrivals of Guardiola, Conte and the pre-season Klopp has spent with his team, the task for the Gunners certainly gets harder this season. Currently in fourth, nine points behind leaders Chelsea, the title dream looks nearly impossible and, after back to back losses to Everton and Manchester City, are only one point clear of fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur. In the EFL Cup, Arsene Wenger was criticised for putting out a weak side in the quarter-finals, ultimately crashing out losing 2-0 to Southampton. It was a case of Fate and Fortune in the Champions League, the fortune being that PSG dropped points to Ludogorets, meaning they finished top of the group. The fate? Bayern Munich is the next round of the competition. They’ve also been drawn away to Preston is the third round of the FA Cup.
Wish 1: A New Manager
“Don’t get me wrong, Arsene Wenger deserves a whole lot of credit for what he has achieved, the ‘Invincibles’ of 2003-04 achieved something that will probably never be repeated again but he can’t continue to live off previous successes. The 10 years without a trophy between 2004 and 2014 was an embarrassment and a disgrace and in recent years he failed to address the blatantly obvious. How many times has it been said that Arsenal need a Defender, Defensive Midfielder and Striker. Every Arsenal fan since Vieira left knew the club needed a strong replacement but for years nothing was done and arguably Arsenal still lack steel. The Mustafi deal brought to an end the years of torture watching the likes of Senderos, Djourou and Ignasi Miquel representing the club and Lucas Perez hardly counts as the world class forward we’ve been looking for. Then there are the results, the consistent failure to mount a title challenge is unforgivable, at this stage of the season the cub’s bid always falters and this year looks no different. The fans don’t celebrate 4th as the club seem to, titles are what it’s all about. The weak mentality of Wenger’s Arsenal also manifests itself in the failure since 2010 to make it out past the Last 16 of the Champions League. Thanks for the memories Mr Wenger but you aren’t capable of providing the club with the strong leadership it needs right now.”
Wish 2: Ozil and Sanchez to sign new contracts
“It’s a nervous time to be an Arsenal fan, the contracts of two of the clubs best players are up for renewal and right now there isn’t too many reassuring stories coming out of the talks. The players seem to be asking for megabucks, the likes of which the club has never paid. Wenger recently tried to reassure fans by saying they won’t be sold but the alternative to that if they don;t sign new deals is they could move for free. Nothing would break my heart more than seeing either of them turning out for an English club other than Arsenal especially with absolutely nothing in return. Arsenal are keen to show that they are now serious title contenders and they no longer lose their best players and this is the perfect opportunity to reinforce that. If the club play hardball and continue this policy of stinginess they could lose these two players and the club could be hampered for years to come. Whatever they ask for, for god sake give it to them.”
Wish 3: Arsenal Fan TV to close
“Even as a fan of the club I often cringe when watching the interviews filmed with fans after matches. Most of the time they revolve around Claude and Ty (two of the channel’s most prominent members) arguing about why Wenger should or shouldn’t be fired and often it gets very heated. The same can be said for a lot of the other angry reactions after matches when the team lose and it’s turning the team into a laughing stock. Whenever the club lose, hundreds of non-Arsenal fans flock to the channel to listen to the likes of Claude moaning to give themselves a good laugh. It just shows the world how divided the fanbase is and you can guarantee when things kick off the video will be plastered all over Facebook. We have a hard enough time with jokes about coming fourth without making problems for ourselves.”
