Good point for Latics.

Struggling Wigan Athletic ended their 5-match losing streak, holding in-form Derby County to a goalless draw at Pride Park.

Derby County were the overwhelming favourites before the game, considering the form of the visitors Wigan Athletic and the Rams 11-match unbeaten run, however, it was the visitors who had the better chances to win the game.

Wigan had an early double chance, with Will Grigg striking the post from a Jordi Gomez corner before Darren Bent cleared off the line from Jake Buxton’s follow-up attempt.

Will Grigg, who was the vocal point of Wigan’s attack, also had an effort brilliantly saved by Scott Carson after a defensive mix-up saw Grigg put clean through for a one-on-one opportunity.

Derby County had the best chance in the second half, with 41-year-old Jussi Jaaskelainen keeping out Tom Ince’s free-kick to ensure Latics leave Derby with a point.

Will Hughes fired wide late on in the game and Wigan Athletic held on to gain a point.

The draw extended Derby County’s unbeaten run, however, the Rams remained in seventh place, one point adrift of the play-off places. Wigan Athletic remained second bottom of the Championship but move six points clear of Rotherham United, who are bottom of the division.

Derby County manager Steve McClaren praised Scott Carson for his display and stated that if it wasn’t for him (Carson), Derby would not have been in the game.

Wigan manager Warren Joyce rued those missed chances for his side and said post-match that “We have to be more ruthless to finish off chances and make it easier to manage games. We’re disappointed we’ve not won but pleased with the performance and the discipline, the intelligence we showed tactically.”
