Wigan Athletic January Transfer Window Round Up

What can I say?! What a transfer window we have had. Latics fans do seem to be happy and impressed about the players brought in by Warren Joyce and David Sharpe.

The one stand out player who was brought late on deadline day is Omar Bogle. The striker came in from Grimsby Town after scoring 19 goals so far this season in the Sky Bet League Two and is a fan favourite at Grimsby so that could be a very good signing. Another player Wigan fans seem to be happy is Gabriel Obertan, Obertan, in my eyes, is a fantastic signing by Joyce. The French winger has worked with Joyce before at Manchester United, Obertan has also made 14 first team appearances for United. Gabriel did play with Newcastle as well between 2011-2016 and was very successful at the Toon, making 58 first team appearances.

Jakob Haugaard is obviously a player we signed before deadline day and he has seemed to impress so far at Latics, Jakob has made four appearances and has kept two clean sheets so far. Another player we have to look at is Callum Connolly, who we signed on the 14th of January and made his debut on the same day against Burton Albion, where he scored two amazing headers and Callum has impressed in recent games such as United in the cup.

Possibly Alex Bruce could turn out as the key signing on loan from Hull. Bruce spent his younger years at Manchester United working with Warren. He moved to Hull City in 2012, making 85 appearances for them. I think Bruce will turn out to be a fantastic defender for Wigan because he is experienced at this level and could work at the back with the other experienced players we have got in the defensive line.

We can’t forget the players who have left the club as well. Yanic Wildschut is a big figure at the club or may I say “was” a big figure at the club, the Dutch winger has left to join Norwich City for £7 million after having a successful time at Wigan Athletic. Adam Le Fondre is another player who has been recalled by Cardiff City and they let him go to Bolton Wanderers on a loan deal.

I probably speak for all Wigan fans in saying, Yanic Wildschut is never welcome at Latics again. Wildschut has done so much for us last season in the Sky Bet League One and this season in the Sky Bet Championship, the way he left was disgusting and horrible to experience as a fan of Yanic. Wildschut featured on the bench against Manchester United, after the game all the players came over and clapped the away following, apart from Yanic. Latics fans and Yanic Wildschut have always had a close bond so I it was strange at the time. Two days later, Wigan tweeted that Yanic had handed in a transfer request. Everyone knew at that point he was off and off he went to Norwich City. When Yanic arrived at Norwich he said “It’s always nice to play in big stadiums but if there are no people in it’s not very nice” and after that he went on to say “This is a step up, better players”, after everything Wigan have done for him, I find that disrespectful and a lot of other fans found what Yanic has said disrespectful as well, not only to us fans but to the club as well.

Another player to talk about is Sam Morsy, who was recalled earlier in January to join up with the squad again after being at Barnsley. While he’s been back and signed the new contract, he has really shown what he can do, especially impressing in the game against Brentford, where he managed to pick up a goal. So many Latics fans are happy Sam is back at Wigan. Sam has said at the start of this season he got told he was never going to play for the club again by Caldwell but Joyce has said that Morsy is his type of player, which is great because I think Sam is a great player. It’s brilliant to have Sam back at the Tics.

I can say this transfer window has been a success and I can’t wait to see the new lads got onto the pitch and show what they can do.
