Report: Fulham 3-2 Wigan Athletic

Big blow for Latics.

Wigan made one change to the side who drew to Norwich City. David Perkins came in for James Weir.

The first chance came for Latics when Omar Bogle was awarded a free kick, Bogle struck it well, only for David Button, in the fulham goal, to make the save. It was a shame Bogle couldn’t recreate his free kick heroics from last Tuesday night.

25 minutes in, Fulham managed to get down the right-hand side after dome good work from Sone Aluko who put it into the box for Floyd Ayite to latch on to and he was able to finish past Haugaard.

Not long after, Wigan equalised thanks to with Scott Malone putting through his own net after being pressurised by Bogle.

Just before the break, Max Power knocked the ball back towards the far post, where he found Michael Jacobs who put Latics ahead going into the break.

Latics had a really good chance just after half-time when Bogle had a shot saved by Button.

Fulham then drew level with 20 minutes left on the clock, the Cottagers had a free kick about 35-yards out, they played it short to Denis Odoi who hit it toward the bottom left corner with power, giving Gilks, who was making his Latics debut after replacing the injured Jakob Haugaard just before half time, no chance.

Just when the game looked over and the Latics had earned themselves a commendable point, the Whites created one last chance. In the 94th minute, Neeskens Kebano was played through by Tom Cairney who slotted it past Gilks to cruelly give his side the win.

Latics went home with no points despite showing fighting spirit to come from behind and take the lead in the game.

Wigan boss Warren Joyce said:

“It’s bitterly disappointing, we didn’t deserve to lose. At 2-1 we were comfortable, really. It was a rush of blood, the free-kick for Fulham’s equaliser was avoidable.

It was a silly free-kick to give away. It was a long way out but we were not organised. It was a poor goal to give away.

It didn’t rattle us, we kept going even though the home crowd is up for it and I still think we had good opportunities.”

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic said:

“I can be proud about my team on one hand that we scored goals and won the game, but on the other hand, I am really disappointed with some parts of the game.

We have to be more solid, we did not show enough of a good attitude and we did not play well without the ball.

At 1-1 it can be a simple lottery, they can win the game too. Then we scored the goals and we go home satisfied with the points. But I am not satisfied with what we offered today.”
