It’s hard to find someone as popular as John-Joe O’Toole if you ask the Northampton faithful, whether it’s sarcastic chanting for his awful spell in 2014 or celebrations for his incredible 2015/16 season, the Cobblers fans are always making more noise for O’Toole than any other player who graces the Sixfields turf. So it comes as no surprise that supporters are raving about the midfielder’s recent magnificent form for the club.
O’Toole has been in fantastic form as of late. In his last four games, the former Republic of Ireland U21 international has netted five goals from a defensive midfield role. He has managed to score more goals in February 2017 than any other player in the English league football (as of 20/2/17).
Prior to this, John-Joe was looked to be returning to his old ways of slipping over every match, making misplaced passes and not shooting on target as was seen during his 2014/15 spell. But since the arrival of new manager Justin Edinburgh, he has flourished.
He has been allowed to play in a free role which means he can move from defence to attack whenever it is necessary. This has given the whole team the opportunity to finish more chances than they were during the Rob Page era.
Edinburgh will be hoping that John-Joe and the rest of the team can maintain the same good team spirit ahead of their tough trip to promotion contenders Fleetwood Town.
The Cod Army have also been in good form recently and will certainly be favourites to take all three points in this match. This should not threaten the Cobblers however, with the League 2 Champions most recently taking a point from 6th placed Southend United. This is in spite of the Seasiders’ recent good form at Roots Hall over the past few weeks.
