Arsenal host Bayern Munich at the Emirates in need of a serious miracle in order to stay in the competition. The Gunners were thrashed 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. The score was 1-1 early in the second half but once Laurent Koscielny was withdrawn through injury, Bayern Munich ran riot and finished the game as 5-1 winners.
Arsenal have lost three of their last five Premier League games and won the other two. Their most recent defeat against Liverpool at Anfield saw them drop out of the top four. This could have serious implications on their chances of securing a Champions League place for next season.
Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga, seven points clear of RB Leipzig. The German side are unbeaten in their last five games (W3, D2, L0) and have scored 15 goals in those matches. Eight of those goals came in one match, an 8-0 demolition of Hamburg.
Mesut Ozil missed Saturday’s game through illness. Arsene Wenger does not believe that he will be physically ready for tomorrow against Bayern but he should return for the FA Cup match against Lincoln City. Apart from that, Arsenal have all their key players at their disposal. Alexis Sanchez was dropped to the bench for Arsenal’s recent game against Liverpool. In his press conference today, Wenger said that he has not decided whether Sanchez would start yet, adding: “I make that decision tomorrow morning.”
Bayern Munich have no injury concerns and their squad is raring to go. The only absentee will be captain Philipp Lahm who is suspended for the second leg. Lahm will remain in Munich but he knows what his team has to do. “We need to be very focused during the game, particularly in the first quarter of an hour, and say to Arsenal: you can do what you want, but Bayern are going though.”
Arsenal winning this match 2-0 knowing full well that that score would not be enough for them to get through to the next round would not be surprising. However, Bayern will be determined to put this game to bed once and for all and advance to the next round. My prediction is Arsenal 1-2 Bayern Munich.
