Who have been the top 3 players in the Championship this season?

With the Championship entering the business end of the season, I decided to look at the best players in the 16/17 Championship campaign. In this article, I’ll be looking at who I believe to be the top three players this season.

3) Anthony Knockaert

The French winger has been having an immense season for Brighton so far and has been their best player this season. So far he’s netted 13 goals and created five assists. Knockaert was a player I wanted at Newcastle all summer andJanuary although that never came to fruition. If he isn’t a Premier League player in a couple of seasons he should seriously think about moving to a bigger club because he is Premier League quality. He’s been fantastic all season and deserves to be on this list.

2) Chris Wood

Chris Wood has been crucial for Leeds’ promotion challenge. The striker from New Zealand has bagged 24 league goals in 36 games. This makes him the league’s top scorer, three goals ahead of Dwight Gayle (although Gayle has had injury issues this season). Leeds currently occupy fourth place and Wood has been the main reason why Leeds have a real chance of promotion. Almost half of Leeds’ goals have come from Wood which shows his quality.

1) Jonjo Shelvey

For the top spot, I had to choose Jonjo Shelvey. He has been our most important and our best player this season. Shelvey has been the main reason why Newcastle are top of the league. The Englishman sits deep in the pitch and plays long balls up to attackers, Xabi Alonso-esque. If you want to see how important he is to Newcastle, watch matches when he plays and then compare it to matches when he doesn’t play, the difference is night and day. This was evident in just how much the team struggled when he was suspended for five matches. Call me biased, but I think he could make the England squad (obviously not whilst he’s in the Championship). He completely deserves to be on this list.
