Sky Bet Championship – Matchday 39!
With Matchday 39 in the Championship now over, let’s take a look back at what happened and the answer is a lot!
Game of the week – Reading v Leeds United:
Saturday night saw a massive game in the promotion race take place, Leeds and Reading went in to the game hoping to pick up three points to solidify thier play offs place and keep their slim automatic promotion hopes alive.
It was Reading who came out on top and strengthened their position in the Championship play-off spots as they ended Leeds’ seven-game unbeaten run to leapfrog them into fourth in the table. Yann Kermorgant’s crisp first-half finish was enough to settle a game that the Royals could have won by more. Roy Beerens and Garath McCleary both went close to extending the hosts’ deserved lead before half-time.
Leeds, who had not lost since 11 February and beat the Royals 2-0 in December’s reverse fixture, improved after half-time but did not create enough in front of goal, despite a spirited effort.
It finished 1-0 to the Royals with the three points taking them above the whites in the table into fourth with the Whites dropping to fifth, one point behind Reading.
The Millers became the first side in the top six tiers of English football to be relegated this season as a home Championship defeat agaisnt Fulham condemned them to the drop. Sone Aluko poked home the only goal of the game to lift the Cottagers into the play-off places. The scrambled finish ended Rotherham’s three-season stay in the second-tier.
Commiserations to the players and staff at Rotherham United, we hope your back in the Championship soon.
