Newcastle United are back in the big time. After a long and difficult campaign, United finished top of the league after a dramatic final day. But who got them there? There are a number of candidates for player of the season but who gets your vote?

Jonjo Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey has impressed this season. His half a season in the Premier League with United was mixed at the best. However, in the Championship, Shelvey has taken a huge step up to perhaps being a candidate for the armband. He has scored five from midfield this season. Shelvey’s contributions have been huge and his absence was heavily felt when he was banned in January. However, as the season went on, it did feel as though he knew this. Perhaps inflating his ego. Shooting from corners and Hollywood passes are spectacular when they come off but seem poor when they don’t. His contribution, however, has been huge and he deserves his place as one of the best in the team.

Ciaran Clark

Perhaps the shock of the season. Reaction to Clark’s signing was one of underwhelment. However, he proved us all wrong by finally supplying Newcastle with a quality defence. Although not perfect, Clark and Lascelles became Newcastle’s preferred back two. With superb performances against Wolves and Huddersfield being some of the highlights. He was superb for Newcastle this season.

Dwight Gayle

All eyes were on Dwight Gayle when he signed for Newcastle. A steady performer in Crystal Palace’s side who had to prove himself as number nine when arriving on Tyneside and that he almost certainly did. Gayle massively impressed in his first season at United. He fired Newcastle into top position in the first half of the season. However, an injury hit second half of the season denied him the golden boot. However, his 23 goals put Newcastle in this position and he deserves credit.

Matt Ritchie

Matt Ritchie was arguably the most hyped signing of the summer. He delivered on this promise as well. Arguably, Newcastle’s best player of the season if not of the division. Ritchie has shown his class this season. His 17 goals and 7 assists have played a huge part in United getting promoted to the top tier. You also feel there is much more to come from the Scotsman. For me he has been United’s best.
