There has been plenty of speculation on who will be Newcastle’s second summer signing. However, reports on Sunday, claim Frenchman Florian Lejeune will be the next to arrive on Tyneside.
With that in mind I take a look at who he is…
In recent days it has been heavily reported that Newcastle have triggered Lejeune’s release clause.
But who is the Frenchman and what can he bring to United? Well to begin with Lejeune is a centre half a position which Benitez will be wanting to improve after some shaky performances towards the end of the season.
The 26 year old is a versatile player with the capable of playing midfield or as a centre back. However, he is mainly used as a centre back.
After impressing in the 2014/15 season for Segunda Division side Girona scoring 5 goals in 40 appearances. Manchester City bought Lejeune.
However, Lejeune failed to make a single appearance for the Citizens. With then Coty boss Manuel Pellegrini loaning the Frenchman back to Girona.
He once again had an impressive season for the side. Scoring three goals in 39 appearances impressing enough to secure him a move to Eibar in 2016.
Lejeune has enjoyed an impressive debut season in La Liga. According to WhoScored.com, Lejeune has had an average performance rating of 7.01.
In addition to this, the Frenchman has an assist and goal to his name. Impressive stats for one of the smallest sides in the league.
In terms of comparing him to Newcastle’s centre backs this season. Club Captain Jamal Lascelles has a better overall rating as well as more goals. However has played more games in an inferior league.
Lascelles has also won more in the air winning 4 to the 3.4 won by the Frenchman. However, when taking this into account the difference in league must be brought into play.
However at just £8.7 million this seems a smart move for Benitez. With Grant Hanley seemingly on his way out of the exitdoor at St. James’ Park.
However, Lejeune doesn’t seem like a first team starter if the deal comes off. Despite this with his track record, there is something to excited for here for United fans.
