Could this be the season when Arsenal finally sign a striker capable of helping them challenge for the Premier League?
Since Robin Van Persie left for Manchester United in 2012, Arsenal have been without a top quality striker. Olivier Giroud was initially brought in to play in a front three alongside fellow new signing Lukas Podolski and Robin van Persie. However, he ended up being a replacement for the latter. Van Persie scored 30 league goals in his last season at Arsenal, while Giroud’s best league total is 16 goals.
Arsene Wenger still claims that Arsenal can win the Premier League, but they have not lifted the coveted trophy for 13 years. The North London side need a consistent, reliable and relatively injury-free striker to stand any chance of challenging for the league. For the last few years the Gunners have been linked to top quality strikers without any success.
Arsenal’s main striker is Olivier Giroud. However, last season Alexis Sanchez was a regular starter up front as a central striker. Giroud was often used as a super sub, a role that he is not willing to perform again next season. With West Ham interested in signing him, Giroud may have spent his last season at the club.
Lucas Perez wants to leave after just one season at Arsenal due to a lack of playing time. While it would be sad to see him go, Perez always performed when called upon and is rightly frustrated about not being able to showcase his talent on a regular basis. The Spaniard could be a brilliant striker for Arsenal but Wenger hasn’t given him enough opportunities.
There was talk of Arsenal trying to sign Kylian Mbappe but the teenage sensation wants to move to Real Madrid. In my opinion, Arsenal have never had a realistic chance of signing him.
The striker Arsenal should go all out to sign is Alexandre Lacazette. The Gunners have been linked to the Lyon striker for years and the move could happen at long last. Lyon want around £60m for Lacazette and he is reportedly open to joining Arsenal despite having no Champions League football next season. Arsenal Wenger is well known for being a penny pincher but he will have to loosen the purse strings in order to sign his compatriot.
Arsene Wenger has already said that Arsenal will only make two or three signings this summer. A top quality striker should be high on his list of priorities, especially if they want to make an immediate return to the Champions League.
