Newcastle United: Predicted starting XI – Without signings!

Will the Newcastle squad remain the same? Or will the team change? Here’s how I believe Newcastle will line-up if they DO NOT make any new signings.

Newcastle are yet to make a new addition to their squad from last season, with the only signing being Christian Atsu on a permanent deal who was on loan at Newcastle last season in the Championship. Here’s how I believe Newcastle could line up without any new additions and why.

Starting in goal… I believe Karl Darlow will remain as first choice in goal for Newcastle. After having a brilliant season in the Championship starting 34 games in 2016/17 season for the toon, and outperforming Matz Sels becoming Newcastle’s No 1 goalkeeper. I believe he should be given the chance to continue showing his talent in goal by being Newcastle’s No 1 for the Premier league season.

Now to defence starting with Left-back, I believe this is one of Newcastle’s weakest positions. Personally I believe Paul Dummett is a Championship player, he just isn’t Premier League standard. With this in mind I believe Achraf Lazaar should be given a chance, Lazaar didn’t get much game time in the 2016/17 season and i think he has a lot to offer. I would start him, and if he doesn’t cut it then a replacement is in order.

Centre-back could be considered as one of Newcastle’s strongest positions from last season. Captain Jamaal Lascelles  and Ciaran Clark formed a great bond during the season. However Lascelles was caught out making quite a few mistakes during the year which made a lot of people question him. I still believe Lascelles should start in centre-back as on his day he is like a brick wall, he’s amazing. Clark had an amazing season, being one of Newcastle’s best players. Consistently playing well game after game, for this alone I believe he should start in CB along with Lascelles.

Right-back, on to my favourite player… De Andre Yedlin. Yedlin has 32 appearances for Newcastle last season, and made a lasting impression. Being very good defensively as well as attacking, five assists and one goal for a right-back in my opinion is very good stats. Running up the right wing with the ball with some very good crossing also managing to get back to get back and stop the opposition. For this I believe Yedlin will do very well in the Premier League with Newcastle.

Midfielders… lets start with Central Defensive Midfielder, Isaac Hayden. The 22 year old arrived from Arsenal last year, and massively impressed. Hayden is still young and has a lot to learn however his performances in the Championship were consistently good. Constantly improving his game and becoming a better player; scoring two goals and four assists in 38 appearances, this is why I believe he should be given a place within the team.

Jonjo Shelvey, a crucial player that majorly helped Newcastle win the Championship. Not only does he belong in the team I believe he should be given the captaincy. Shelvey made 47 appearances, scoring 5 goals and 11 assists in the Championship last season. His long balls proved crucial and majorly helped with Newcastle’s scoring record. He was the main man that held everything together during the season, this was proved when he had a five match ban and Newcastle struggled to win games and score goals.

Left and right wing… Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu. Both players had a brilliant season showing a lot of potential going forward, giving everyone good hopes for the future. Ritchie had an outstanding season scoring 16 goals in all competitions, being an major part of the team. There is no doubt in my mind that Ritchie deserves to be in the Premier League as he is a fantastic player who brings a lot of creativity to the team. Atsu had a very good season showing he has a lot of potential to be great. The Ghanaian scored five goals during the season, and opened up many chances. In my opinion he deserves to be in the team to prove how good he actually is.

Ayoze Pérez. Maybe he didn’t have an amazing season however he did manage to bag himself 12 goals in all competitions. I believe Newcastle need to improve within this area. As the current squad stands I believe Ayoze Pérez would be the best fit for the team as he not only scores but can be very creative sometimes. Personally i believe Pérez is a player who when he’s good he’s really good, but when he’s bad he’s really bad.. which is a bit hit and miss sometimes.

23 goals last season… Dwight Gayle. Obviously he was going to be in the team, Gayle proved doubters wrong last season by showing how good he really is. He made a name for himself at Newcastle and I believe he will shine in the Premier League as long as he has the right players and support around him. Here is an article on Dwight Gayle I wrote, Is Dwight Gayle Premier League ready? Which will give you more on my reason why.

But who will Rafa choose?
