Newcastle: Where will we finish?

With the season drawing closer and closer, a lot of predictions have been made about where we will finish. So I decided to make my predictions.

Newcastle have never had an easy time in the Premier League in recent years. Gone are the days of battling Manchester United for the title and finishing in the top four. In the past six years, Newcastle have only finished in the top 10 twice.

However, a manager as high calibre as Rafa Benitez has the ability to bring the good times back to St James’ Park. He has the tactical ability and experience to (potentially) put Newcastle into Europe but it’s a little bit too early to think about that.

This season, I believe we can finish around 12th-13th. I think with the current squad, that is perfectly achievable. The squad is good enough to comfortably avoid relegation but not enough quality to break into the top seven/eight.

For player of the season, I think Shelvey will be the standout performer. The Englishman’s technical ability and vision the pick a pass will be key this season. I also think he has a very good shot at getting an England call up for Russia 2018, providing he has no major injuries.

With Lejeune already signed, I think we need to sign a winger, creative midfielder, a defensive midfielder, and a left back. On the right wing, we only have Matt Ritchie which will cause a problem if he’s injured as there isn’t another natural right winger at the club. Again with the creative midfielder, it’s a squad depth problem. If Shelvey is unavailable, there’s nobody that can link the defence and attack. A defensive midfielder is needed because I’m not sure Hayden is ready for the Premier League and Colback isn’t good enough. I think we need a left back because Dummett isn’t good enough and Lazaar hasn’t been playing enough.
