On Thursday, Vurnon Anita signed for Leeds after being released by Newcastle. But was Anita a success at Newcastle? Or are United right to get let the Dutchman go.
So was Anita a success?
In 2012, Newcastle signed Vurnon Anita from Ajax for £6.7 million. Making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-1 victory.
For his first two years, Anita wasn’t good enough. With only two goals in his first two seasons coming against Club Brugge and Hull.
Anita couldn’t be trusted, making mistakes regularly. However, as he became more accustomed to the league, Anita became better and better.
For me, one moment saw Anita finally switch on when it mattered. When the Dutchman was selected on the last day against West Ham in 2015. With the position in the league on the line.
Anita stood up, giving an excellent performance. Despite missing a sitter in the final minutes, Anita showed exactly what he could bring to the club.
During our relegation season in 2015/16, Anita was a shining light. In a side of cowards, Anita stood up to the plate. The Dutchman playing out of position at full back.
Whilst not spectacular, Anita was solid and put in decent performances throughout. Anita then stood by Newcastle for the drop down to the Championship.
Anita had yet another solid season in the Championship. Making 24 appearances for United. With an impressive 80.2% pass succession rate.
Anita managed to see out experienced full backs Achraf Lazaar and Jesus Gamez from the starting XI.
Anita was a huge part of Newcastle’s promotion. His exit has raised eyebrows amongst Newcastle fans.
Especially with Yoan Gouffran being offered a new contract. Anita has looked solid however Gouffran has not.
For Leeds United fans, you’ve gained the type of player who will get a clubs promoted. I’m personally sad to see Anita go
