Last season, Matz Sels was widely regarded as one Newcastle’s worst players. But what happened to him?
In the summer of 2016, Matz Sels was signed from Belgian side KAA Gent for around £6 million. Newcastle fans were in good spirits due to the fact that he once got into the Champions League team of the week.
But as the matches progressed, Sels was seen to be shaky and low on confidence. Every cross or corner that came into the box, he seemed very nervous when trying to collect the ball. But after 12 matches he finally lost his place in the first team after costing Newcastle 2 points against Villa away after a late mistake. That match also lead to him deleting his Twitter account after receiving abuse (the account still hasn’t returned). He was dropped to the bench and replaced with Darlow while Elliot was still finding fitness. After Villa away, he never returned to the first team and spent the majority of the season with the Under-23s.
But what went wrong? Many, like me, believe it’s due to a lack of confidence.Yes he could have been a top keeper but in a season where promotion was absolutely vital, you simply can’t spend time messing around with a player that ‘might’ turn out good. Especially when you’ve got 2 players who are much better, it’s not worth the hassle.
At the minute, Sels is currently on loan at RSC Anderlecht and made a poor mistake on his debut gifting a goal to the opposition. Although to be fair to him, it was a poor pass to him. It looks like, however, Sels’ Newcastle career is over as Rafa is already looking for a new keeper without even considering Sels. It is a shame it never worked out for him at Newcastle but it’s to move on to bigger and better things.
