After an encouraging defeat against Spurs. Newcastle were humbled today by a Huddersfield side who finished fifth last season. In a miserable display, United looked miles off the pace of the Terriers.
So what is wrong with Newcastle…
Newcastle were embarrassing today. A real return to the bad old days before relegation two seasons ago.
Whilst not being terrible, Newcastle failed to inspire any optimism with a flat display. With perhaps the highlight of the match being Matt Ritchie’s excellent snapshot.
However, apart from that, Newcastle were lacklustre. A lack of confidence on the ball in front of bouncing John Smiths stadium didn’t help.
Furthermore, the excellent defence from the Spurs game appeared weak. Coupling this with a flurry of disappointing passes.
As with the Spurs game, United didn’t look like scoring if this game was on for a week. The display can only be described as toothless going forward.
Dwight Gayle simply seems inefficient in the Premier League. Despite a fantastic year last season, he doesn’t seem to be the answer in the Premier League.
Joselu was okay in his first appearance. However, he cannot be described as the answer to Newcastle’s problems.
In reality, it’s not the strikers which are the main problem. There is a complete lack of creative players in the side.
Players such as Perez and Diame, who were unimpressive last season. Haven’t improved and aren’t good enough at this level.
The main lesson to be learnt from the game is that Newcastle need two or three quality players. This side will not survive in the Premier League.
No matter what tactics Benitez can employ it will not be enough due to the team’s weakness. This a Championship side and the players brought in have been decent however are unflattering.
Ashley needs to find the money to sign quality players. If not Newcastle will find themselves in the Championship come next season.
