What is going on? Crisis club Newcastle have moved into the top four with their third win on the bounce. So who impressed for the Magpies after another fine afternoon of football..?
Rob Elliot – 8
A great afternoon for Newcastle’s new number one. Elliot has quickly shown why Rafa Benitez has been playing him over last years regular starter Karl Darlow. Saturday was no exception. Elliot made some exceptional saves to win United the game. In a competent display which has become the norm for the former Charlton man.
DeAndre Yedlin – 7
DeAndre Yedlin made a confident return to the Premier League. Continuing from where he left off for the Magpies. Yedlin put in a solid performance.
Ciaran Clark – 7
Clark is beginning to look like an absolute steal for the Magpies. Continuing his excellent performances from the Championship into the Premier League. He put another strong performance on Saturday.
Jamal Lascelles – 9
A leader. That is the only word which describes the former Forest man. Showing maturity beyond his age. Lascelles appears to be the driving force behind this side. Fighting for every ball and fighting for his teammates he may be the best captain at the club since Shearer. With perhaps only Kevin Nolan getting close. His determination got him his second in two games. A true captains performance.
Chancel Mbemba – 8
Another great performance by Mbemba. The Chancellor appears comfortable despite being out of position. His excellent pass nearly doubling United’s lead.
Issac Hayden – 7
A solid fighting performance which is typical of Hayden. Despite being new to the league, he is quickly acclimatising to the Premier League.
Mikel Merino – 8
Merino continues to impress at St James’. His ability and potential to hurt the opposition is key to Newcastle’s performances. He showed this again on Saturday.
Matt Ritchie – 8
Ritchie’s assists total is now second in the whole league. That is testament to his incredible start to the season. His ball in for Atsu’s opener was nothing short of wonderful.
Ayoze Perez – 7
A good performance for Perez. He shows glimpses of his potential however always has moments which frustrate United fans. However, Saturday was a better performance from the Spaniard.
Christian Atsu – 8
Atsu has impressed this season. This continued with Atsu taking his chance well to score his first Premier League goal.
Joselu – 6
Joselu gets the lowest rating of the game simply because he didn’t take his chances. In reality, the former Stoke man should have had a hat-trick against his former side. However, he failed to convert. Despite this, he looks essential in Rafa’s gameplan and offers more than other strikers in the squad
Jonjo Shelvey – 6
Mohammad Diame- 6
Dwight Gayle – 6
