Jose Mourinho seems to have moved a step closer to signing top-target Leon Goretzka in the January transfer window.
As the Manchester Evening News reports, Mourinho is a known admirer of the 22-year-old German international midfielder.
He has netted 17 times in his 126 games for Schalke following his move from VFL Bochum in 2013 and has two goals and an assist in his eight Bundesliga appearances this campaign. He has been by Germany at every level from U-16 upwards and boasts 10 senior caps to his name, winning the 2017 Confederations cup in the process. In fact, he finished as joint-top scorer in the tournament with three goals.
As such, United are well aware they will not be the only ones fighting for his signature and fear being drawn into a bidding war with some of Europe’s powerhouses. Bayern are known to be particularly keen and are looking to add Goretzka to their recruitment drive of some of the continent’s top young talents with Renato Sanches, Corentin Tolisso, Niklas Süle and Kingsley Coman already arriving at the Allianz over the past year.
However, on a positive note for the Premier League side, Barcelona are believed to have withdrawn their interest.
Goretzka’s contract runs out in the summer of 2018 and with some of Europe’s biggest clubs circling, looks unlikely to sign a new deal so United could get their man at a knockdown price or even on a free in the summer.
