Newcastle: In defence of Mitrovic

With Newcastle’s goalscoring issues, there have been calls for Mitrovic to re-enter the team.

Newcastle currently have three established senior strikers: Aleksander Mitrovic, Joselu, and Dwight Gayle. Joselu has squandered several good chances and is in poor form; Dwight Gayle looks way off the pace compared to last season and then we’re left with Mitrovic.

In the 2015/16 season, the Serb was the main man and netted nine Premier League goals (not too shabby for your debut season in a poor squad). However, last season he was cast aside for Dwight Gayle who scored goals for fun.

Over his three seasons at the club, Mitrovic has netted 14 goals which looks like a very poor record at first glimpse. However, things get a bit better when you take a deeper look. In those three seasons, he’s completed roughly 3200 minutes which equates to (roughly) 35 matches. More proof of why stats are deceiving without context.

On top of that, we have his international career. He’s scored 8 goals in 14 matches which is a very good total for the international stage. When he’s backed and given match time, he’s proven to score goals.

I think it’s wrong that Benitez is freezing the Serbian out (as much as I love Rafa, he’s not exempt from criticism) because we’re struggling for goals currently and Mitrovic isn’t getting into the starting eleven.

Compared to Joselu; Mitrovic is a much better finisher but Joselu has much better movement. I understand why Joselu is being picked as Mitrovic can be quite static but Mitrovic has proved he can score goals which is what we need.

I also understand that Mitrovic can be a liability to his explosive temper and has already picked up a three match ban for an elbow on Javier Hernandez. But setting that aside, I still think that Mitrovic is superior to Joselu.
