On Saturday Newcastle travel down to Old Trafford to face Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
Newcastle have to players currently injured. Paul Dummett is nearing full fitness after a hamstring injury on the first day of the season but isn’t 100% fit yet. The other injury for Newcastle is Mikel Merino. The Spanish midfielder suffered a back injury a few weeks ago and his return date is still unknown.
Their opposition, however, have a few more injuries. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered towards the end of last season; likewise, Marcos Rojo is also recovering from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered around the same time; Paul Pogba is still touch and go for the weekend to the delight of Newcastle fans; Michael Carrick is still nursing a calf injury and won’t be available for the match; finally, Phil Jones won’t be available after picking up an injury on duty with England.
My predicted team is Rob Elliot in goal; Javier Manquillo, Jam, Florian Lejeune and DeAndre Yedlin making up the back four; Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden as a central midfield partnership; Jacob Murphy, Ayoze Perez, and Matt Ritchie as an attacking trio; with Joselu up front.
Head to head:
Historically, the Manchester club have normally gotten the better of Newcastle. In their last 10 meetings, Newcastle have won 2 times, drawn twice and lost 6 times. Not exactly inspiring statistics but Newcastle fans can take solace in the fact that Paul Pogba is a big doubt. The Frenchman is key for the Red Devils breaking down deep blocks (something they should expect to face) and missing him is a massive blow.
Newcastle will come to Old Trafford and set up well defensively like they always do but I just can’t look past Manchester United for this match. I doubt it’s going to be a thrashing but the match will end 2-0 to the Manchester team.
