Newcastle: Realistic expectations

After a string of poor performances, many Newcastle fans have scaled back their expectations and I’ll be talking about where I think Newcastle will finish.

After two draws and four wins from late August to early October, the sky was the limit for Newcastle fans but a string of four defeats on the bounce has brought everything crashing back down to earth. After planning for a solid mid-table finish, many fans are worried about a relegation battle.

The fear of relegation:

It would be unwise to completely rule out a relegation battle. There is still a real chance we could be dragged down to the wrong end of the table. The fans need to remember that Newcastle are a newly promoted squad with limited funds, the odds are stacked firmly against them. As a supporter, the least you can down is back the manager and the players because that can make a massive difference.

My prediction:

As I thought at the start of the season, I predicted Newcastle to finish around 15th/16th place. The squad is barely Premier League standard so to not be rock bottom is a blessing. To be in 11th in almost December is a very good position to be in for Newcastle’s situation.

January transfer window:

The January transfer window is make or break for the rest of the season. A striker who can get 15 goals will cement Newcastle’s safety for the season. Other positions need to be strengthened, however, a striker is the main target. This all links back to the takeover that may or may not happen. If a takeover can be completed before Christmas, Benitez should have enough money to buy who he needs. If not, Mike Ashley must back Rafa with an appropriate amount of money or relegation is a real possibility; and if that happens Mike Ashley is left with an unattractive club and an even bigger bill.
