With the January transfer window approaching very quickly, having a successful window is absolutely crucial to Premier League survival.
After reports that a potential takeover probably won’t take place until February, it’s time for Mike Ashley to open his wallet and give Rafa what he wants. Benitez is a brilliant manager, but he’s by no means a miracle worker. Trying to compete in the Premier League with an almost Championship level squad is very difficult, even for a manager as good as Benitez. There are still several positions in the squad that need to be strengthened as soon as possible.
What Ashley fails to understand is that if he doesn’t invest in January, relegation becomes a very real threat. If Newcastle do get relegated, that leaves Newcastle as an unattractive investment and Ashley will be left with the club for at least another season.
If Newcastle do get relegated, Benitez could quite easily leave and find a new club. That then leaves Newcastle in a lot of trouble. When you look at the managers currently available on the market; Tony Pulis, Slaven Bilic etc, it’s a very tough time if you’re looking for a new manager.
In January the club needs a new striker because Joselu isn’t good enough and Rafa doesn’t rate Mitrovic; a full back who is comfortable on both sides because Manquillo isn’t good enough and Yedlin has been poor recently; and a holding midfielder because Hayden hasn’t been good enough. Several other positions need depth added to them but those 3 positions need to be sorted as soon as possible.
If Newcastle do get relegated, they could quite easily end up like Sunderland. A club with a very, very bleak future. So Mike Ashley, if you want this club to survive and be an attractive investment, get your wallet out.
