With January just around the corner, Italian side Juventus and English club Manchester United are set to see one of their top transfer targets, Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, pen a new contract with Diego Simeone’s men, according to Calciomercato.

Gimenez signed with Atletico in 2013 from Uruguayan club Danubio and has become a mainstay at the heart of Diego Simeone’s defence within recent seasons, forging a strong partnership with fellow Uruguay international Diego Godin. The defender has also made 37 caps for Uruguay, despite only being 22 years of age,

And with every good performance that Gimenez has for the Madrid club, his stock seems to be on the rise as the two aforementioned clubs in Juventus and Manchester United seem to be disappointed after taking a keen liking to the centre-back, with him set to sign a new deal at Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2022.

Since the summer, Juventus have had meetings with Gimenez’s representatives to try and get an understanding of what the young defender’s intentions were, but are now left slightly red-faced as their good work appears to have come to nothing.

And with Gimenez now set to stay, Juventus look ready to move onto their next option, Atalanta’s Mattia Caldara.
