A wonder-goal by Mesut Özil made the difference as Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners at the Emirates.
The first good chance of the match came 10 minutes in when Lacazette sets up Sanchez with a short pass, but the Chilean fired the ball over the net. A few minutes later, Ainsley Maitland-Niles causes some real problems when he beat two men but just hit his shot wide. Finally, the deadlock was broken when the ball popped up nicely for Özil who thunders a volley home leaving Elliot with absolutely no chance, already a goal of the season candidate.
Around the 30 minute mark, Xhaka tried a long-shot which could’ve easily beaten Elliot if it had been on target. Özil caused more problems with a shot from a tight angle, however, Elliot and Lejeune got just enough on it to knock the ball out of play.
The second continued as the first did. Maitland-Niles tried a shot which Elliot parried right in front of an Arsenal player but thankfully managed to scramble away from danger. Jacob Murphy then almost got lucky when he opened up some space and tried a shot which Cech pushed away. Hayden tried his luck with the follow-up but managed just a corner. With 30 minutes to go, Lacazette went clean through but decided to chip Elliot and wasted an opportunity to finish the match.
Then Jack Wilshere had a chance to bury Newcastle but side-footed the ball right at Elliot. Newcastle weren’t giving up though as Joselu had an attempt outside the area but would’ve needed a lot of luck to find the back of the net. The last ten minutes were all Newcastle and Perez tried to level it with a good header but couldn’t reach the back of the net.
There can’t be any shame losing the way Newcastle did and it took a wonder-goal to separate the two teams which is very promising considering it was at The Emirates. However, Newcastle must get a result at West Ham to end this poor run of form.
