This January transfer window is one of the most important in the club’s recent history but Mike Ashley is making sure he’s known as one of the worst Premier League owners.
It’s no secret that this Newcastle side is one of the worst to compete in the Premier League. It’s mainly a Championship side with one or two quality players in between. Rafa Benitez was fully aware of this fact and asked for a fair bit of money to equip the side. Any Premier League owner would accept these demands and be aware of the situation. Newcastle, on the other hand, only managed to bring in six players totaling under £40 million. In today’s market that barely gets you two Premier League quality signings. However, Benitez deserves credit for getting Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy for relatively cheap fees.
What Mike Ashley fails to understand is that if he doesn’t invest, the club will get relegated (with a very high chance of Rafa walking), potential investors will get cold feet and he’ll be stuck with the club for years. There’s a very high chance we could end up like our neighbours from over the Wear.
This club has been relegated twice under Mike Ashley; that is two times too many for a club the size of Newcastle. From playing and competing in Europe and fighting for the title, to scrapping relegation every season; I believe there’s only one common factor here.
With the right funding, Newcastle have massive potential to become a top 7/8 club with a manager like Benitez. Any other manager would have this club stone dead last, Rafa deserves a massive amount of credit for massively overachieving with this squad. A manager like Benitez does not deserve to be scrounging for every last penny.
A message to Mike Ashley; thanks for two relegations in ten years, but it’s time to go.
