Manchester United linked with £70 million left back

According to Don Balon, Manchester United are interested in signing Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso. This comes after the rumours that Luke Shaw wants to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Throughout the season, Jose Mourinho has been linked with a handful of left backs and it is reported that a fee of up to £70 million could be splashed out on the Chelsea defender.

It is stated that United view Alonso as the best left back in English football and a high fee would be needed to lure the Spaniard away from Stamford Bridge.

Alonso started his career at Real Madrid but was only able to make a single appearance for the senior team after playing 39 times for Real Madrid B. In the summer of 2010, with Alonso’s future at Madrid looking bleak, English side Bolton Wanderers signed the left-back for an undisclosed fee. In three years, Alonso made 35 appearances for the Trotters, scoring on five occasions. After impressing for the English side, Fiorentina snapped up the Spaniard, signing him on a three-year deal.  During this spell, Alonso was loaned out to Sunderland where he made 16 appearances. After playing 58 times for Fiorentina, the 27-year-old signed for Chelsea in 2016.

The £90k-per-week defender has made over 70 appearances for the Blues so far and has become a crucial first team player for Antonio Conte, shining in the Premier League winning team last season.

Alonso seems very content in London and is unlikely to want to leave unless he sees Manchester United as a club with more potential.

Manchester United have been struggling to find someone who can play in the left back position this season, with makeshift defender Ashley Young trying his best at the age of 32 and Luke Shaw making some appearances but not shining to the level he was one dreamt of.

Alonso would be a brilliant signing for United and it looks as though the main factor in making this deal go through will be the money. This deal could also depend on whether Jose Mourinho will be bringing in Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, with the rumours of the Bayern superstar heading to Old Trafford still circling around social media.
