Chelsea set to pay £130 million for Spanish superstar

It has been reported that Premier League champions Chelsea are preparing to pay a huge £130 million to sign Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio.

The 22-year-old had also been linked with fellow Premier League club Liverpool but it is Antonio Conte’s side who seem to be the favourites to snap up the Spanish superstar.

The Blues are in need of a star signing and Asensio is the newest name to be added to a long list of rumoured transfers to be potentially made this summer, as Chelsea hope to conquer Europe once again.

It has not been the most successful of seasons for the Blues, sitting in fifth place, a staggering 25 points behind the league leaders and champions-elect Manchester City. This is a stark contrast to last season where Chelsea won the Premier League title with ease.

We all know that Chelsea are not afraid to splash the cash to gain players that they feel will lead them to success. Last summer, the Blues spent a whopping £70 million on fellow Spaniard Alvaro Morata, but this marquee signing has not proved to be what they had hoped with Morata has only scored 13 goals in 39 appearances.

Asensio signed for Real Madrid in 2014, costing only £3.5 million. Since signing for the club, the Spanish midfielder has been loaned out to RCD Espanyol, where he gained an impressive 12 assists. Since returning to Madrid, Asensio has made 78 appearances and has scored 20 goals. The 22-year-old has also gained nine caps for Spain and will almost certainly be a part of Spain’s World Cup squad this summer.

According to Don Balon, Chelsea are ready to spend as much as £130 million to bring Asensio to Stamford Bridge. This would be the largest ever transfer fee paid by a Premier League club, with the current highest fee being Manchester United’s £90 million spent on French midfielder Paul Pogba.
