Match Review- England v Nigeria

England faced Nigeria in an international friendly at Wembley. The Three Lions won 2-1 after a mediocre game, making both sets of fans nervous for the World Cup just around the corner.

England took on Nigeria for their first of two friendly games before the World Cup. Winning 2-1 after an excellent first half and poor second half. Nigeria managed to pull it out the bag in the second half making for an edgy 45 minutes.

England are due to face Costa Rica on Thursday however after a mediocre performance they must up their game to win the friendly and be prepared for the World Cup.

England manager Gareth Southgate said after the game ” It took us a little while to work out how to deal with the changes in their system, there was a seven or eight-minute period when we hadn’t quite worked out how to adjust ”

The England team impressed in the first half, deserving their two goal lead. Defender Gary Cahill and Captain Harry Kane being the scorers for the Three Lions. Whereas Nigeria unimpressed during the first 45minutes allowing for England to run all over them.

When the second half came around Nigeria had a burst of energy and strength managing to pull back one goal from Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi. Whereas England lost their way and hung on to the lead by the skin of their teeth.

England captain Harry Kane said after the game ” It was a good win, they’re a tough side. First half, I thought we were excellent. We moved the ball quick, got in behind, created a lot of chances. Second half we had trouble, they changed their formation. They scored early, which always puts the pressure on.”

Both teams managed to take some positives from the game, however both proving they’re not quite ready for the World Cup and need a little more time to grow and prepare for the biggest international footballing competition of the world.
