Match Report: Argentina knocked out as Mbappé flourishes

Argentina took on France for the first game of round 16. A thrilling game ending 4-3, Which seen Argentina’s World Cup hopes come to an end. And France going through the the quarter-finals.

The seven goal thriller kicked off the round 16 of the World Cup 2018. From the beginning to end the game impressed. After just 15 minutes France had hit the crossbar, got a penalty and scored. As 19-year-old PSG star Kylian Mbappe was fouled twice in the space of five minutes which led a free kick and penalty. His game didn’t end there. The Frenchman scored a brace, and impressed with his skills, pace and overall talent. Former England and Newcastle captain Alan Shearer said “At 19, to put in a performance like that, with millions watching and Messi at the other end, it was simply brilliant.”

France were leading 1-0 when Ángel Di Maria scored in the 41′ minute to make it 1-1 going into half time. Argentina came out fighting in the second half. Scoring in the 48′ minute to make it 2-1, which did last long. As Frenchman Pavard scored nine minutes later making it 2-2. The action didn’t stop there. Just seven minutes later in the 64′ minute Mbappe made it 3-2 then scoring four minutes later to make it 4-2. Argentina falling behind again brung on Manchester City superstar Sergio Agüero, however proved to be a little too late. Agüero scored in the 90+3′ minute to end the game at 4-3 ending Argentina’s 2018 World Cup hopes. As well as ending what could be Lionel Messi’s final World Cup and last chance of lifting the trophy.

The Barcelona star ended the tournament with just one goal. The 31 year-old all time great did not have the greatest of tournament’s along side rival Cristiano Ronaldo who also exist the tournament after losing to Uruguay. Both unlikely to feature in the next World Cup as players.

As Argentina head off home France proceed to the quarter finals where they play Uruguay at 3:00pm Friday 6th July.
