Newcastle United are involved in a £10 million deal to capture Alan Dzagoev from CSKA Moscow, reports from the Mirror can confirm.
Steve McClaren looks set to bolster his attacking options this January as the transfer window re-opens and is already looking to complete his first piece of business within the first few days by signing the Russian midfielder.
Dzagoev has been a key player in Russia for CSKA Moscow in the past seven years during his career but is reported to be ready to leave his homeland for a new challenge in the Premier League.
The Toon Army are considering to offer the £10 million as they desperately look to bring in better players to help steer them away from the relegation zone, which they fell into after the 1-0 loss to West Brom earlier in the week.
Boss Steve McClaren admitted after the game that he wants to quickly add to his squad and is hoping to do so quickly as the transfer window re-opened today, and the Russia international attacking midfielder is at the top of Newcastle’s hit list.
The 25-year-old is arguably one of the best products that has come out of Russian football in the past few years and has become well recognised in Russia and most of Europe.
Many will remember Dzagoev after he stormed into action during Russia’s first group game against the Czech Republic at Euro 2012, as he scored twice and then went on to bag another against co-hosts Poland in the following game, seeing him become one of the up and coming future stars during the tournament.
Recently however, he has suffered with injures which have delayed his impressive progress but he has regained his true form this season and this has helped CSKA sit top of the Russian Premier League going into the winter break.
Now the Magpies are set to try and lure him to the north of England which would be seen as an impressive piece of business by Newcastle, as Dzagoev has bags of potential and at the age of just 25, still has a lot to show.
If the deal is to go through then he could make a great attacking partnership with Newcastle’s current star player Georginio Wijnaldum, and the two could be the difference which sees the northern club still in the top flight next season.
Newcastle have been lacking in goals recently and with strikers not hitting form either, his goals and provided assists will be a major boost for them and could see Dzagoev become a local hero on Tyneside.
