Borussia Dortmund vs Liverpool – Europa League Match Preview

On Thursday evening at 8.05pm Borussia Dortmund will be taking on Liverpool in the first leg of their Europa league clash. The game is set to be an incredible affair with the main headline being Jurgen Klopp returning to his old side.

This is the first time, in 15 years, that the two teams have met in a competitive match. However, the difference now is that Liverpool are a much weaker outfit than they were 15 years ago and Dortmund are a much stronger outfit now with the likes of Marco Reus and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Above) leading the line. And with Dortmund already looking to have cemented their place in next years Champions League because of their current second place in the Bundesliga, and with Liverpool sitting in a disappointing 10th in the Barclays Premier League and being nowhere near the top four, is there any hope for the Merseysiders?

The match promises to be a huge affair with an incredible atmosphere that will most likely last the whole night. With a mix of 66,000 fans, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and the fact that it is a European night, this may be one of the most exciting European games of the season. Both sets of teams play football a very similar way. With both teams playing the highly energetic pressing game, the match is set to get off to a flyer.

How I predict the two teams will line up.

Borussia Dortmund

I believe Dortmund will play a 4-1-4-1 formation with:

GK – Weindenfeller
RB – Piszczek
CB – Hummels
CB – Papadopoulos
LB – Schmelzer
CDM – Weigl
RM – Mkhitaryan
CM – Castro
CM – Kagawa
LM – Reus
ST – Aubameyang

I believe Liverpool will play a 4-2-3-1 formation with:

GK – Mignolet
RB – Clyne
CB – Lovren
CB – Sakho
LB – Moreno
CDM – Can
CDM – Henderson
RM – Origi
LM – Coutinho
CAM – Lallana
ST – Sturridge

Overall, I believe that the game will be fantastic with both teams looking to play their own styles of football. I think that the game will no doubt be nervy for both sets of fans but in my opinion Liverpool have a lot more to worry about than Dortmund. My prediction for the game is Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Liverpool. With Aubameyang scoring twice for the hosts and Coutinho for the visitors.
